Family Dentistry is the field of dentistry that focuses on the oral health of people of all ages. Dentistry is a helping profession. One of the aspects of dentistry we enjoy is serving families and building relationships. We see some families for generations, from the infant just getting teeth to the elderly and everyone in between.

I was working in the neighborhood at the time and the shop owner was a patient of Dr. Parker’s. She recommended him to me. After my initial appointment with Dr. Parker I felt very comfortable. I put my trust in Dr. Parker’s professional knowledge and ability and I am very pleased with the results.

One of the many benefits of family dentistry is that we are able to treat all of the members of a family in one place. When we are able to see the whole family, we can look for genetic risk to things such as gum disease. We now know that both gum disease and cavities are passed on between members of the same family. Since prevention of disease is important in our practice, we have a pain free cavity risk screening program called Carie-Free. This screening program is used to diagnose patients of all ages to see if they are at risk for cavities, and if they are, we have new ways to prevent future cavities. We also use a laser cavity finder which helps detect cavities on the biting surfaces of the tooth before they show up on a x -ray, and if the tooth needs treatment we can keep the cavity small and conserve more of the tooth.
Typically, we recommend cleaning start around 2 ½ to 3 years of age, but we like to just look at children when their teeth start to erupt. Often, problems can be avoided if we catch them early. The main concerns with small children are cavities. Cavities can be caused by giving an infant a bottle at night. If you do give your baby a bottle at night, you should try to only give water. This will help avoid cavities. As your child’s permanent teeth are coming in between the ages of 5 and 7 we can evaluate their bite and determine if they will need braces later on, or if they will benefit from interceptive care now to help the jaws grow properly and possibly prevent braces in the future.
Currently, our oldest patient is over 100 years old and many are in their 80’s and 90’s and are keeping most of their teeth for life. It is important for this age group to see a dentist regularly as some medications can cause dry mouth and without the protection of saliva the teeth have a higher risk for cavities. We also enjoy helping people who are missing teeth, to restore their smile with implants, crowns, and bridges, or implant supported dentures. We can evaluate each patient and their unique situation to help them achieve optimum dental health.
As a Center for Dental Medicine office, we are trained to do a Scientific Wellness Assessment on our adult patients to determine if they are at risk for heart disease, stroke or diabetes that is associated with gum disease, and sleep apnea. This assessment is also important for pregnant moms, by diagnosing and treating gum disease we can help reverse and slow down the ravages of gum disease with laser therapy. Oral Appliance Therapy now helps our patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea, sleep better and wake up refreshed. These are just some of the ways we are “Saving lives… one smile at a time.”
So you can see, our office is equipped to handle all of your family’s dental needs. We truly appreciate seeing families in our practice and we are able to treat any issue from preventive care, to cavities, to orthodontics and cosmetic procedures, to implants and dentures.
